Cinematographer, Mike Leigh collaborator Dick Pope dies aged 77: 'Lovely friend and all round legend'

Academy Award nominated cinematographer Dick Pope has died. He was 77.

The news was announced in a statement by the British Society of Cinematographers.

"It is with deepest sadness that we learn of the passing of our friend and colleague Dick Pope BSC," they wrote.

"Dick had a reputation for being a wonderful collaborator and someone who was passionate about the artform of Cinematography.

"We pay tribute to our wonderful friend and colleague and out [sic] thoughts go out to his family especially his wife Pat at this difficult time."

Pope was best known for his work on Mr. Turner and Life Is Sweet among others.

The cinematographer began working in film in the late 80s, continuing to work through the '90s and until the year of his death.

He was also well known for collaborating with English writer and director Mike Leigh, working as a cinematographer on many of Leigh's films over the years.

Pope was nominated twice in his career for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

His first nomination was in 2006 for The Illusionist. He was nominated again in 2014 for his work on Mr. Turner.

Pope last worked on the 2024 film Hard Truths with Leigh as director and starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who previously appeared in Secrets & Lies in 1996.

Leigh recently told Indiewire Pope had undergone "major heart surgery" before the film.

Tributes for the cinematographer have begun to flow in on social media.

Actor Tom Hardy, who worked with Pope on the 2015 film Legend remembered him as a "lovely friend and all round legend" in a heartfelt Instagram message.

The British Academy Film Awards wrote they were "saddened to hear of the passing of cinematographer Dick Pope" on X.

"Renowned for his long-standing collaboration with Mike Leigh, Pope was nominated for two BAFTAs for his work on Porterhouse Blue in 1988 and Mr Turner in 2015."
