Silicone sealant is one of the worst places in the bathroom to clean once it becomes mouldy, but luckily there is a natural yet powerful method to clean it away that works better than bleach.

Mould needs moisture to grow which is why it is commonly found in bathrooms, and one of the most difficult places to try and remove it is silicone sealant.
The silicone sealant around the edges of sinks, bathtubs and showers often develops micro-pores over time and these tiny imperfections trap water as well as soap.
It can be incredibly tricky to remove mould once it gets inside these silicone sealant pockets as you cannot use bleach as it will damage the silicone and cause it to crack.
Luckily, the experts at Villeroy Boch have shared there is an easy way to clean away bathroom mould using only natural items you likely already have in your home.
They said: “Fortunately, you can get rid of mould in the bathroom – in many cases using simple household remedies.”

What to use to remove mould from silicone seal
One of the best ways to remove mould without using harsh chemicals is baking powder as it contains natron and can kill mould due to how alkaline it is.
The expert said: “Natron is a real all-purpose weapon in the home. It can be found in most kitchen cupboards in the form of baking powder and can be purchased in supermarkets and pharmacies.”
Mould tends to thrive in acidic environments, so using baking powder not only gets rid of the mould but makes the environment inhospitable enough to stop the spores from growing back.
Another item you should consider using is rubbing alcohol, as it will dehydrate mould and break down the spores to kill it quickly.
The expert said: “Methylated spirit or rubbing alcohol with a volume of at least 70 per cent is very effective in removing smaller traces of mould. You can buy these products in a pharmacy or supermarket.”

How to remove silicone seal mould
To begin, make sure you are dressed appropriately to tackle mould spores. Wear a long-sleeved top, gloves, safety glasses and a mask if you can as mould can be a major help risk.
Open a window before you begin to get rid of the mould fumes and keep the bathroom well-ventilated.
Pour the alcohol onto the silicone sealant and then sprinkle some baking powder on top so it forms a paste. Then, use a clean cloth to wipe the mould stains until they disappear.
If the mould is particularly stubborn then leave the paste to sit on the silicone seal for at least 10 minutes to give it time to break down the spores.
Then wipe the surface with clean water and make sure it is completely dry to prevent mould from growing back.
The silicone seal should now be completely white, clean and mould-free without having to spend ages scrubbing it.
