Bathroom drain clogs are the trickiest to unblock due to the amount of grime going down the plug every day, you can easily clear them with one simple item found in most households.

You may think that only water is going down your bathroom pipes but other residues such as soap, oils and hair will eventually begin to build up.

It takes hair roughly two years to dissolve naturally on its own, and sometimes these blockages will not budge even if you use a plunger or drain snake.

However, Katie Berry, a cleaning expert and founder of Housewife How Tos, has shared that the best way to dissolve a drain clog is using a product likely already stored in your bathroom cupboard.

Katie said: “When all else fails, or you’ve got a drain too narrow to snake, use a hair removal cream.

"I always have a bottle of Nair on hand, so this is one of my favourite go-to methods.”

One simple solution is to use hair removal cream and hot water to clear a blockage (Image: Getty)

It may seem obvious, but hair removal creams contain chemicals which break down the proteins in the hair so they will not stay stuck to your pipes.

This makes it easier to then use hot water to flush out any hair strands and also break down any grease buildup from soap as well.

How to dissolve a bathroom clog

All you need to do is first try to get rid of as much of the water in your bathtub, shower or sink as possible, which means you may need to use a towel to aboard any excess water.

Then simply turn on your bathroom exhaust fan or open a window, and squirt some hair removal cream down the drain.

Wait 10 minutes, then turn on the hot water tap, and the blockage should hopefully be gone.

Katie said: “Be sure to turn on that bathroom exhaust fan before you start.

"I forgot once, and my house smelled like burned hair for days. Also, never mix this with other chemical drain cleaners like Drano.”

Another simple way to unclog a blocked drain  is to use washing soda which can break down most residues in your pipes.

Many people also swear that mixing together baking soda and vinegar will also get rid of any blockages and is a popular method for anyone who wants a safe and eco-friendly method.

Katie said: “The baking soda and vinegar create a chemical reaction that can dissolve minor clogs, including hair.

"This natural drain cleaner is usually my first go-to for drain cleaning and also for deodorizing smelly drains.”

However, no matter how you try to unblock a drain make sure not to use bleach as not only does it tend to be ineffective against grease or hair but it can also be dangerous.

Bleach can damage your pipes and can also be poisonous if you decide to use try product to try and remove a blockage, so it is better to use simpler methods or call a plumber instead.
