The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially classified the recall of a Borsari Food Co. "Bloody Mary Mix" product as a Class II recall.
A Class II classification indicates that the recalled product may pose a moderate health risk to consumers, with the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences low.
Newsweek contacted the company for comment on Saturday via email outside of regular working hours.
Why It Matters
The voluntary recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product may contain undeclared allergens, including fish (anchovy), or soy.
As stated in the company announcement posted on the FDA website, this labeling issue could lead to allergic reactions in individuals with sensitivities to the allergens. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to these items run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products, which were not listed on the product label.
What To Know
The issue was discovered in the context of a New York State Department of Agriculture inspection. Current in-house inventory, as well as future products, will clearly declare anchovy and soy on their labels, the notice stated.
The recall has been issued across 25 states. No illnesses have been reported to date.
A Class II recall is issued when a product's defect could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects. It may also apply if there is only a slight risk of serious health effects.
The classification emphasizes the FDA's concern over public safety while acknowledging that the situation does not meet the criteria for the more severe Class I recall.
As reported by Newsweek, the recalled products all had a UPC code of 815893000101, and came in a clear plastic 32 oz. bottle with a black label.
The FDA has been notifying stores and customers who bought the product online.
