Petrol and diesel owners are set to make savings with a major car tax charge axed from 25 December.

Transport for London suspends the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) fee on Christmas Day meaning motorists can dodge the £12.50 per day fee.

ULEZ fees will be suspended throughout the entire zone meaning those travelling to many parts of Outer London now affected by the fee will not have to pay.

Motorists living in Central London are set for further savings with the Congestion Charge fee also temporarily stopped.

The £15 per day fee is not payable between December 25 until January 1, 2025 in a whole week's worth of freebies.

However, TfL confirms that the Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) charge applied to the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles is operational every day, including on Christmas.

The ULEZ discount is issued every year on 25 December and is not a one-off bonus for 2024.

The charge is suspended as there are fewer public transport options available for locals to get around to visit family and friends on the big day.

To remind motorists of the Christmas Day exemption, TfL previously posted an update on social media.

The message explained: "ULEZ is not in operation on 25 December.

"Charges apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day (25 December)."

However, London's ULEZ charge is back in operation on Boxing Day, meaning those staying in London overnight could be caught out.

Motorists heading to London for Christmas can check whether their vehicle is ULEZ compliant on the TfL website.

Petrol cars which meet Euro 4 standards or later, usually registered after 2006, may not have to pay rates.

Meanwhile, diesel cars and vans registered after September 2015 may also get away without paying fees.

London’s ULEZ scheme was controversially expanded last year with many Outer London regions such as Bromley and Harrow now in the charging zone.

Locals heavily campaigned against the updates but were unable to force through changes with road users now issued the staggering fees to use the roads.

The £12.50 per day charge means residents are paying up to £87/50 to drive their cars on UK roads every day of the week.
