The cobbles are about to witness some heart-wrenching scenes as Coronation Street's Kevin Webster is diagnosed with cancer in 2025.
Michel Le Vell's character, who's been a fixture since rocking up in 1983, has become a staple with soap fans and a bona fide legend.
Kevin’s life in the soap, including his high-profile marriage with Sally (Sally Dynevor), raising daughters Rosie (Helen Flanagan) and Sophie (Brooke Vincent), as well as his recent love affair with Abi (Sally Carman), has seen its fair share of ups and downs.
Now, it's been confirmed by new Corrie boss Kate Brooks that a new plot will reveal Kevin grappling with testicular cancer.
She revealed: "As we go into the new year, Kevin will discover he has got testicular cancer which causes a massive strain on his relationship."
Kate continued: "Abi [Webster, played by Sally Camrna] is a really strong character, but she is going through her own turmoil at the same time. We want to tell this really truthfully, we've been working closely with MacMillan to make sure that we tell the story right."
Kate spilled the beans on Kevin's reaction to the latest bombshell, saying: "It was really important actually, that we don't show Kevin being embarrassed to talk to his friends about it. And he's quite open about it which I felt was refreshing.", reports Plymouth Live.
But it's not all smooth sailing for Kevin, as his romance with Abi is set to hit rocky waters. Kate revealed: "But ultimately it's about his relationship with Abi and that is going to be truly tested."
The soap's new producer also hinted at more turmoil ahead, adding: "Abi is going through her own situation as she struggles in the aftermath of a big event that happens in January.
"She loves Kevin and he loves her, but the temptation comes Abi's way let's put it that way.."
Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
