Former Loose Women anchor Andrea McLean and comedian and actor Richard Blackwood also sent messages of support.

Sally is best known to people as Rovers Return barmaid Shelly Unwin on Coronation Street, a role she played between 2001 and 2006.

But the actress and writer, who now stars in and co-created Channel 5's comedy drama series The Madame Blanc Mysteries, has ruled out a return to the cobbles.

"It's a great job and I've always said this about Coronation Street, never say never. It has been many years now and I've got my own show and I produce as well, so it's probably not for me," Sally previously told Radio Times.

However, she praised former co-stars who have reprised their roles in Weatherfield in recent years.

"But I absolutely think it's the best thing ever for people to go back, because it's like another world. It's a great job."
