With news off a fifth Corrie favourite character set to leave the Cobbles, fans brand the show a 'sinking ship' after an actor from the soap said ITV 'have no money'
Coronation Street fans are calling the soap a "sinking ship" as they announce yet another character axing amid an "exodus".
The soap has allegedly been hit with huge financial issues which has caused several cast members being either asked to leave or pressured to step down. While this has not been confirmed by the network, Sally Ann Matthews, who played Jenny Bradley on screen, went on a rant a couple of weeks ago branding the show as skint.
As she appeared on Instagram Live, she was asked by commenters about filming on location. She replied: "We don't do on location… right… okay so the whole 'Corrie doesn't do location any more' is true, thankfully because I hate being on location - location is s*** - I hate it."
Adding to this, she claimed ITV simply don't have the money for it anymore. "So I'm glad ITV have got no money - am I allowed to say that? Well I have said it,' Sally finished.
The latest star to announce their exit is Charlotte Jordan, who plays popular Rovers Return barmaid Daisy Midgeley. She chose to leave the Cobbles, as detailed in a recent Instagram post.
Charlotte, who was dubbed the new Michelle Keegan, wrote: "After a brilliant four years for Daisy, it’s time for me to start a new chapter and explore other opportunities. It’s been a privilege to be part of a wonderful institution with even more wonderful colleagues who have taught me so much."
Social media users were upset with the news, but understanding. One fan wrote: "Another one bites the dust! It’s genuinely a shame Daisy is leaving as one of the only decent actors and a breath of fresh air but I don’t blame Charlotte Jordan for leaving the sinking ship in search of better opportunities. Coronation Street is in crisis, what a mess!"
Earlier this week, PC Craig Tinker star Colson Smith revealed he was also leaving, but this time it was due to bosses ditching him. Colson himself confirmed on X his knowledge of the upcoming departure, stating: "Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker's time on the Cobbles is to come to an end in 2025. I've LOVED every single second of my 14 year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world."
In the last few weeks, the series, which will celebrate its 65th anniversary this year, has been showing the first signs of extreme change. It saw the departure of Helen Worth as Gail Platt as well as Luca Toolan, whose character Mason Radcliffe was killed off in heartbreaking scenes that aired on Monday (6 January).
Sue Devaney (Debbie Webster) and Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw) are also set to leave the soap in 2025. Reports from The Sun claim that other so-called veteran characters are at danger off being dropped due to a cash crisis.
It's reported that bosses, including producer Kate Brooks, who joined in April, have been focusing on younger actors as they are cheaper to recruit and develop.
