Country singer Sundance Head, who won Season 11 of The Voice in the US, has been hospitalised after accidentally shooting himself while hunting.

His agent Trey Newman said the 46-year-old was taken to hospital by helicopter after the incident on his ranch in Texas on Friday.

A post on his verified Facebook page said Head was hunting by himself when he grabbed his .22 firearm out of his car.

“When he grabbed it the .22 came out of its holster and hit the exterior of the Jeep (and) just right and went off,” his wife Misty wrote.

“Sundance said it happened so fast and he could see the bullet dislodging.”

Misty added that Head went to call emergency services, however he realised he didn’t have his phone on him.

“He took off down the driveway out to the main road to flag a car down for help,” the post said.

“Ten cars later someone turned around to help and called 911 … he’s so grateful and lucky to be alive.”

The bullet hit Head just above his navel, lodging in his abdominal wall. His wife said it had just missed the singer’s vital organs.

He did not require surgery and has since been released from hospital.

“Any higher or lower would have been devastating,” his wife wrote on Facebook.

“He’s definitely going to have a lot to say and once he feels up to it I’ll have him do a video in his own words.”
