McCarthy's contract is set to expire on Jan. 14, and Jerry Jones is set to sit down with the head coach and draw out a new contract that will keep him in Dallas.
Initially, Jones revealed that McCarthy was free to speak to other teams should they ask him to interview him. That moment came true when the Chicago Bears requested to interview the Cowboys head coach.

After days of no response from the Cowboys, it was revealed that the organization denied the Bears' request to interview McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy. Many believed that the denial was due to Jones wanting to bring back the head coach. Now, that has been proven.
McCarthy is a proven winner and currently has a 49-35 overall record with the Cowboys through five seasons. Three of those five seasons have also led to playoff appearances. Though the team has yet to make a Super Bowl, they have been a winning team.
The Cowboys had to deal with multiple injuries in 2024, including losing Sam Williams, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dak Prescott, and Trevon Diggs for either all or most of the season. First-time Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer also had to deal with these losses.
It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys choose to move on from Zimmer. All of the assistant coaches under McCarthy can also seek jobs elsewhere starting on Tuesday, so McCarthy will need to work fast to either retain some of them or hire new replacements.
McCarthy spent the better part of a week explaining that he had no desire to leave the Cowboys, but everyone knew the decision would be up to Jones. Jones can often take his time when making important decisions and was upbeat about the possibility that his head coach would be taking other interviews.
Jones' tune changed, as the Bears were the only ones to request an interview, and were shot down rather quickly following that request.
Multiple Cowboys players also backed McCarthy returning, especially Prescott.
"I believe in him wholeheartedly," Prescott told Yahoo! Sports' Jori Epstein. "I don't want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance -- another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. 'On his terms' may be a good way to say it."
Now, Prescott will be reunited with McCarthy, as the pair attempt to rebound from their losing season in 2025.
