Sanders told ESPN that while he's intrigued by the request, he's also happy at Boulder.

"To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it's intriguing," Sanders told ESPN on Monday night. "I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it's intriguing.

"But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community."

Reports circulated on Monday evening that Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones reached out to Sanders regarding the team's vacant head coaching spot. The two reportedly spoke on Monday, but don't have any formal interviews set up yet.

The Cowboys and former head coach Mike McCarthy officially parted ways on Monday after five seasons together. It was an unceremonious end to McCarthy's Dallas tenure, and happened even though just days ago, the Cowboys blocked McCarthy from interviewing with the interested Chicago Bears.

However, as the Cowboys' exclusive negotiating window with McCarthy neared its end, Dallas elected to move on from the former Super Bowl winning head coach.

"Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team. These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover,"Jones said in a statement Monday.

"Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here."

Jones quickly shifted focus to the head coaching search, which included a conversation with Sanders.

Sanders just finished his second season as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes following three seasons at Jackson State.

After going 4-8 in his first season at the helm, the Buffaloes had a bounce back season in 2024, going 9-4 and losing in the Alamo Bowl.

Sanders' sons — Shedeur and Shilo — are both eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft, leading some to believe Deion would follow them to the NFL.

Deion Sanders spent five seasons with the Cowboys as a player, making four Pro Bowls and earning three All-Pro First Team honors. He won one Super Bowl with the Cowboys in his Hall of Fame playing career.
