Denzel Washington is stepping into a new role-and this time, it's not for the big screen. The 69-year-old Hollywood legend, known for his performances in Training Day and the upcoming Gladiator II, was baptized on Saturday at Kelly Temple in New York City, where he also received his minister's license.
Clad in a gray T-shirt and black sweatpants, Denzel spoke candidly about his faith to the congregation before his baptism. "It took a while, but I'm finally here," he shared, emphasizing that his transformation is a testament to God's power. "If [God] can do this for me, there's nothing He can't do for you. The sky literally is the limit."
Denzel's wife of 41 years, Pauletta Washington, stood proudly by his side during the emotional ceremony. "Forty-six years later, here I'm still standing next to him as only God will have it," Pauletta said.
Her heartfelt words reflected the couple's enduring bond and their shared commitment to faith. "You are the head of our house and you have set a great example for our children," she added, referring to their four kids: John, 40, Katia, 37, and twins Olivia and Malcolm, 33.
Denzel is not afraid of what people will say
The moment marked a profound chapter in Denzel's spiritual journey, which he's openly discussed in recent months. In a November interview with Esquire, the two-time Oscar winner spoke about how his faith guides him, even in the sometimes superficial world of Hollywood.
"I'm unafraid. When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I've been given by my Lord and Savior," he said. Denzel also dismissed the concept of a monolithic "Hollywood," saying, "What does that even mean? It's not like we all meet somewhere and discuss what we believe. I've never been to a Church Actor Meeting."
The Equalizer star's baptism has drawn praise from fans and faith communities alike, showcasing yet another inspiring facet of a man who continues to redefine what it means to lead by example, both on and off-screen.
