Denzel Washington has revealed that he is set to appear in Black Panther 3, one of his last films before he retires. In an interview with Australia Today, Washington explained that there are “very few films” left for him to make and that he plans to step away soon.
The Oscar-winning actor revealed Ryan Coogler is in the process of writing a role for him in the third installment of the Black Panther franchise. Denzel also discussed his appearance in the forthcoming Gladiator II, an unnamed Steve McQueen film, and an adaption of William Shakespeare’s Othello.
“For me, it’s about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best,” the legendary actor expressed. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done…I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70.
“After that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking to Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next ‘Black Panther.’ After that, I’m going to do the film ‘Othello,’ After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
Netflix previously announced that Denzel Washington would be cast as Hannibal, the ancient Carthaginian general, in Antoine Fuqua’s next movie, Marvel Studios has yet to share any information on the next Black Panther film. But, the connection between BP, Coogler, the cast, and Denzel had already been established.
Years before his untimely death, Chadwick Boseman dedicated the film to Washington. Boseman revealed that the icon paid for his acting school tuition and insisted, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”
“My whole cast stands on your shoulders,” Boseman said in 2019, as he presented Denzel with the AFI Life Achievement Award. “The daily battles won, the thousand territories gained, the many sacrifices you made for the culture on film sets through your career, the things you refused to compromise along the way lay the blueprints for us to follow.”
