Director's heartfelt Golden Globes tribute to Aubrey Plaza after her husband Jeff Baena's death

Aubrey Plaza has been sent a heartfelt tribute from the Golden Globes stage days after her husband's death

While accepting his award for Best Director, The Brutalist filmmaker Brady Corbet sent his support and well wishes to Plaza and the family of Jeff Baena, who died on Friday.

Baena, a director and screenwriter, died at his home in California on January 3, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner records.

He was 47, and his cause of death was ruled as suicide.

After thanking his family, the cast and crew of The Brutalist, and more in his speech, Corbet sent his love to Baena's widow.

"Finally, tonight my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff's family," he said, before wrapping up with a simple "goodnight".

Plaza was set to present an award at the Golden Globes but was absent as she mourned her husband's sudden passing.

Baena was best known for his work on the 2014 horror-comedy Life After Beth and the 2017 historical comedy The Little Hours.

He and Plaza worked together on the 2021 comedy series Cinema Toast and the 2022 film Spin Me Round

Baena co-wrote the acclaimed 2004 film I Heart Huckabees, which featured Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin.

He also wrote and directed the 2016 dramedy Joshy, which starred Thomas Middleditch.

Plaza and Baena married in a private ceremony in 2021 and had been together since 2011. At the time, the actress told People how they decided to tie the knot.

"We were quarantined for months and months like everybody else," she said then. 

"And we did enjoy it. I think it was, obviously other than all of the catastrophic things happening in the world, just on a personal level, relationship level, was kind of nice to just be forced to be in one place for that long."

Baena moved to Los Angeles to pursue an entertainment career after graduating from NYU's Tisch Film School.

The late star started as a production assistant and worked his way up through the ranks to become a director.
