Divorced Woman Upset Son Invited Dad's New Girlfriend to Wedding

3 weeks ago 2

A groom-to-be on Reddit got on his mom's bad side after he invited his dad's new girlfriend to his upcoming wedding.

"My parents have always had a rocky relationship. About a year and a half ago my dad decided to leave my mother for good. Two months after they split he got a girlfriend and at this point they’ve been together over a year," the man began.

"My dad has even mentioned marrying her. My mom has been reeling and I can totally understand that she’s hurt over the split, but truly they’ve been divorced since 2010," he continued.

Ultimately, he decided to invite his dad's girlfriend because she's going to "become an active part" of his life one way or another.

"There’s no way she could replace my mom but she’s with my dad, so if I have kids eventually then they’ll view her as part of the family," he added.

Unfortunately, his mom has been having a difficult time accepting her ex's new girlfriend's invite, and it's impacted their mother-son relationship negatively before the wedding.

"She feels replaced, however, I invite her to everything wedding related, not my dad's girlfriend. But instead of showing up she chooses to be angry at me for just inviting this person to the wedding. I just don’t know what to do because I want my mom involved, but she just won’t get past the fact that we are in a different phase of life," he concluded.

"You're definitely not [wrong] for wanting to include your dad's girlfriend, especially if things are getting serious between them. It's like preparing for a new chapter in the family book, and she might as well get a guest appearance, right? Your mom's opinion is completely valid too. It's a hard transition, and she might just need more time to process everything. Inviting her to everything wedding-related is a great move, but she might still be feeling like she's losing a part of her past," one person wrote.

"I understand why you want to include your dad's new girlfriend, but maybe you are jumping the gun a little bit. Why not wait to see if they actually get married? Wait until she actually becomes a family member. Don't make your wedding her introduction to the family. It has only been a year or so that he has dated her, and she was quite the rapid rebound. They may not ultimately work out," another commented.

"I mean, your relationship with your mom must be less than ideal if you think that your dad's girlfriend is worth risking it over," someone else weighed in.
