The internet loves to claim we should stop pitting women against each other, yet every few months, there’s a new pop star “feud” dominating social media. The latest? Billie Eilish vs. Taylor Swift. From shady interviews to album chart battles, fans have been dissecting every detail. So, is there actual beef, or is the internet reaching? Let’s dive in.
March 2024: The Vinyl Controversy
It all started when Billie Eilish gave an interview to Billboard, criticizing artists who release multiple editions of their albums on vinyl, calling it environmentally wasteful.
“We live in this day and age where, for some reason, it’s very important to some artists to make all sorts of different vinyl and packaging,” she said. “I can’t even express to you how wasteful it is.”
Swifties took this as a direct shot at Taylor, who is known for releasing several vinyl variants for her albums. The backlash was so intense that Billie had to clear things up on Instagram in April.
“Okay so it would be so awesome if people would stop putting words into my mouth and actually read what I said in that Billboard article,” she wrote. “I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues. & when it comes to variants, so many artists release them – including ME! which I clearly state in the article.”
She wrapped up her statement with a reminder that the bigger issue is climate change, not just one artist.
“The climate crisis is now and it’s about all of us being part of the problem and trying to do better sheesh.”
May 2024: The Chart Battle
Fast forward to May, and things got even messier. Taylor had been holding onto the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts since April 19 with The Tortured Poets Department. But when Billie dropped her album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, on May 17, Taylor conveniently released three surprise limited-edition variants of TTPD that same day.
Billie’s fans found the timing suspicious. Swifties, however, defended Taylor, saying it was just another example of her playing the music industry game to keep her album at No. 1. But then, things got even shadier when fans discovered that Billie’s manager, Danny Rukasin, had liked and retweeted (then quickly unliked) a post accusing Taylor of deliberately blocking other artists’ chances at the top spot. Swifties also dug up older tweets where he had thrown shade at Taylor before, which only fueled the drama.
May 2024: The “Too Long” Concert Comment
As if things weren’t already messy enough, Billie made a comment on Stationhead Radio about long concerts that had Swifties up in arms.
“Doing a three-hour show… That’s literally psychotic. Nobody wants that. You guys don’t want that. I don’t want that. I don’t even want that as a fan,” she said. “Even my favorite artists—I’m not trying to hear them for three hours. That’s far too long. That’s literally psychotic.”
Since Taylor’s Eras Tour is famously over three hours long, Swifties took this as yet another dig. But here’s the twist: Billie had previously *praised* Taylor’s ability to put on such a long show, telling the LA Times in October 2023:
“Beyoncé and Taylor [Swift] are untouchable superstars; the fact that they can put on a show that long, and it’s filled with so many incredible moments, is really amazing.”
So, Is There Actual Beef?
At the end of the day, neither Taylor nor Billie has directly called each other out. Most of the drama has been fueled by fans, managers and some unfortunately timed releases. While there’s no confirmed *bad blood* (pun intended), the tension is definitely there.
