A woman wasted no time putting her Christmas gift to good use—but her furry friend would prefer she didn't.
Sarah Gillis, 29, received an LED face mask for Christmas. While the device, designed for light therapy, promises to improve skin and stimulate collagen production, her dog, Peanut, seems less than impressed. The 4-year-old cavapoo's reaction to the glowing mask, which looks like something out of a horror movie, has gone viral.
In a video posted on December 27, Peanut appears confused, staring at the camera before the clip flips to Gillis wearing the white mask illuminated by a yellow light. As she flashes a peace sign, Peanut decides he's had enough, jumping off the bed and darting for the door.
According to Gillis, who lives in England, this behavior isn't unusual for her nervous pup. "Peanut is scared of her own shadow," she told Newsweek. Despite Peanut's initial fear, Gillis has continued to use the LED mask, which she wears most evenings.
"I do try to wait until she's asleep and not looking, then very quietly put it on so she doesn't realize," she said. "Peanut is still very skeptical, but I think she's finally realized it's still me."
LED light face masks are becoming increasingly popular for their ability to offer an effective, affordable and safer alternative to laser treatments and chemical procedures, according to business consulting company Grand View Research. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, these devices have been endorsed by a growing list of celebrities, dermatologists and influencers. Stars such as Victoria Beckham, Julia Roberts and Kim Kardashian have actively promoted LED masks on social media and at events, boosting their appeal, particularly among millennials. Beckham even shared her own glowing review in January last year.
However, Peanut seems less convinced. In her now-viral video, which has garnered 173,000 views, Gillis humorously acknowledged the unintended side effects of her skin care routine. The on-screen text jokingly described Peanut as "low-key traumatised," while her caption read: "Poor Peanut, appreciate it's kind [of] a creepy look."
"Mine is exactly the same. He is getting better but still hates it," wrote one commenter. Another said: "For some reason mine loves it, wags his tail every time I put it on and sits there staring until it turns off."
"Same! It took my dog a few [minutes] to actually look at my face but when she did the reaction was priceless," said a third commenter.
