A pair of Shih Tzus from Texas got caught on camera accidentally falling into their flooded yard, and internet users can't cope with their hilarious reactions.
In a TikTok video shared on Sunday by the dogs' owner, Brook Tanton, under the username @brookemctanton, the two pups, Chewy and Murphy, can be seen excitedly running out their front door, barking as they chase a bird away from their yard.
However, distracted by the bird, both pups failed to notice the water filling up the yard, which had gotten fully submerged overnight, falling right inside it as their owner tried in vain to warn them. "I did not think they wouldn't realize the road was flooded …" says the caption.
The poster told Newsweek that the pond outside of their front door had flooded over night into their yard. Then, a large bird landed on the water, and because her pups love to chase birds away, she thought it would be fun to let them out and play.
"But [I] did not expect them to run into the water and not realize it was there. They chase these large birds like this at the lake all the time, but always stop at the water line," Tanton said.
"Needless to say, it tickled me, and I could not stop laughing, especially at how defeated Murphy seemed since he ran into the water."
If you own a dog, you already know how hard it is to get them to listen to you once a bird or another small animal has caught their attention.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that this fascination is instinctual for them, a trait inherited from their wild ancestors, the wolves. These big canines used to hunt to survive, and while our pups today are all well fed with foods that are made specifically for them, they still feel the need to act upon their instincts.
But this doesn't mean that they can't be stopped. The best way, according to AKC, is to train them to redirect their attention to you on cue, rewarding them with a treat every time they listen to your commands.
Tanton soon managed to call the pups back in and dry them up, although they initially seemed reluctant to end their fun.
"Contrary to popular belief, they were not mad at me and ran circles around the house afterward. They also continued to watch the bird out of the front window and lose their minds when it flew into the yard again," Tanton said.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received almost 3 million views and more than 432,000 likes on the platform.
One user, WhyYouWannaKnow, commented: "Zero self preservation skills."
MotherFluffbutt posted: "They looked so embarrassed."
