Don Lemon gushed over the public’s love for Matt Lauer and suggested the former “Today” host could launch a comeback. (Watch the video below.)

In an interview on the “Hollywood Raw” podcast with Dax Holt and Adam Glyn, posted this week, Lemon was asked if his friend Lauer could return to media after being accused of sexual assault and other misconduct that got him fired in 2017.

“I think that if he could come back to digital, he can set his own course,” Lemon said.

“I only got to know Matt after, you know, the whole situation happened ... because we live in the same town, and we have mutual friends,” Lemon explained. “And whenever I see Matt out and about — or you know, even with us if we go out to dinner, my husband and I go out to dinner with him and his fiancée — and people love him.”

“Women love him!” Lemon continued. “They’re like, ‘Man, oh my God, can I get a picture? I love you. I miss you on television.’ ... I think the public loves him. The public misses him, but it’s just the… it’s the people inside the business who are afraid.”

Lemon, who was canned by CNN in 2023 after commenting that Nikki Haley “isn’t in her prime” amid allegations that he harassed female colleagues, leaned further into a potential return for Lauer.

“Maybe in this whole Trump era, when canceled is over, I don’t know, maybe there is a way that he’ll come back,” Lemon said.

“I’ll put it this way: I think the general public ... would accept Matt back,” he said. “And I think people would watch him, and I think the ratings would be great.”

Lemon said proof of Lauer’s popularity is in his outings with him. “Everybody flocks to Matt, and everyone wants a picture, and everyone says, ‘I miss you, and we wanna see you back on television.’ ... I hear it every time.”

Lauer would have disturbing baggage to overcome.

One of his accusers, Brooke Nevils, said in a 2019 book he anally raped her at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. (He says he had a consensual affair with her). His supposed predatory ways were no secret at NBC, and he reportedly had a door-locking button at his desk so he could privately carry on inappropriate encounters with women. (However, the gadget had already been installed before he took that office.)

Fast-forward to 30:45 for the discussion about Lauer.
