Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the President-elect, has landed in Greenland with media personality Charlie Kirk and businessman Sergio Gor.
"Greenland is beautiful," Trump Jr. posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.
Why It Matters
President-elect Donald Trump has suggested in the past that the United States should buy Greenland, which is an autonomous territory that has been part of Denmark for more than 600 years. Former President Harry Truman offered to purchase it from Denmark in 1946 for $100 million in gold.
Greenland has access to the Arctic, where international competition has arisen in recent years as nations race to claim northern territory in hopes of accessing natural resources abundant in the region, like gold, silver, copper and uranium. The U.S. has considered acquiring Greenland several times in the past, with the most recent attempt in 2019, when Trump first brought up the idea. Greenland's capital, Nuuk, is closer to New York than the Danish capital Copenhagen.
What To Know
A source familiar with the trip told Newsweek Monday that Donald Trump Jr., 46, has no meetings scheduled with the Greenlandic government and that he is there for a "quick day-long trip to shoot some fun video content for podcast."
Justin Wells, the producer of Art of the Surge, posted on X that they were filming for Season 2 of his Trump documentary series. The President-elect called into a lunch that his son, Kirk and Gor were having in Nuuk on Tuesday.
"It's a very special place," Donald Trump said on the phone. "It needs security for itself, and it needs security for the world."
Someone in the background agreed and said "yes." Donald Jr. told his dad that he's learning a lot and that the place is beautiful.
"We're going to treat you well," the President-elect said.
Kirk posted a video to X with "the youth of Greenland" and Donald Jr. The boys were wearing Make America Great Again Hats and said they thought America is "great."
Donald Jr. and Kirk recently joined for a special episode of the ThoughtCrime podcast. They discussed why Black men are "pivoting away" from Democrats and leaning more toward President-elect Trump.
Kirk, 31, is a conservative political activist and co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012. The nonprofit organization advocates for conservative politics on high school and college campuses. He hosts the talk program, The Charlie Kirk Show, and has promoted Trump-aligned causes, including issues on critical race theory and climate change. He hosted a "you're being brainwashed" tour during the 2024 presidential campaign, trying to gain more Gen-Z voters for Trump.
Gor led Right for America, a super PAC that supports Trump. He also published in the lead up to the election two books called "Our Journey Together, Letters to Trump" as well as "Save America" through a publishing house he operates with Donald Trump Jr.
President-elect Trump announced in November that Gor will run his personnel office. He was an advisor to the President-elect since the 2016 campaigns. The 37-year-old was previously a booker at Fox News and he officiated former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz's wedding.
The three landed in Greenland on Trump Force One, the Trump Organization's Boeing 757. Donald Jr. posted a video of the cockpit, which featured a President-elect Trump bobble head, featuring the politician in an all-black outfit, sunglasses and with a knife.
"Greenland coming in hot... well, actually, really really cold!!!!" Donald Jr. posted.
Two weeks ago, President-elect Trump posted to his social media platform Truth Social that "the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."
Greenland's prime minister, Múte Bourup Egede, responded to Donald Trump's remarks, in a statement saying that "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale, and we will never be for sale. We must not lose our long fight for freedom."
What People Are Saying
President-elect Donald Trump on Truth Social: "Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"
Charlie Kirk on X: "The youth of Greenland love America and they love Trump.
"Let's go!!"
What's Next
In his New Year speech last week, Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede intensified the call for independence from Denmark, asserting that the island must liberate itself from "the shackles of colonialism" and determine its own destiny. Notably, he did not mention the United States in his address.
