Donna Gregory, an experienced North Carolina journalist, lost her battle on Tuesday, November 19, and died surrounded by her loved ones after a long battle with cancer.

"With deep sorrow, we share the heartbreaking news of the loss of our beloved and veteran news anchor, Donna Gregory. She was surrounded by her loved ones," read a statement from local station WWAY3, where the anchor worked for several years.

According to the publication, Gregory died after a painful battle with lung cancer, which progressed to stage 4 in April. However, from her diagnosis, the presenter shared with her followers her experience with cancer. In April, she shared a "special message" where she spoke about her fatal diagnosis, after a biopsy confirmed the presence of cancer cells, after "months of studies to determine the cause of a recurrent cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and weight loss".

At the time, the host said: "I'll be off the air for a while so I can undergo whatever treatment protocol the doctors create. My plan is to get stronger and healthier every day, and prayers help, always"."There is a breeze of beauty in all of this" and he thanked his "angels in disguise as friends" and family. Despite the death sentence he received since April, Gregory "faced his illness with grace and determination, undergoing immunotherapy and chemotherapy while remaining "a beacon of hope and inspiration," added WWAY 3.

Donna Gregory's career recognition

During her career, Donna Gregory was a mentor to budding journalists and a friend to her newsroom colleagues. She came to WWAY 3 in 2019 as a temporary replacement for anchor Randy Aldridge, who was also diagnosed with cancer. However, with her grace in front of the cameras, she stayed on as a permanent host.

"Her death leaves a void that words alone cannot fill," lamented the broadcasting station and announced a live tribute to honor her legacy. "For now, we mourn her loss and send our deepest condolences to her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched. We will miss Donna Gregory deeply," the station concluded.

For their part, Gregory's children noted that her audience knew her for her professionalism in front of the cameras, but "for her children, she was much more than the accomplishments listed in her career," they wrote in a Facebook post.
