In an October 22 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the 49-year-old host was joined by Anderson, 57, and Valerie Bertinelli as they all ditched makeup and celebrated their natural beauty.
In doing so, Barrymore and Bertinelli, 64, joined a mission Anderson has been championing since September 2023, when she stopped wearing makeup to almost all of her public appearances.
At the start of the show, Barrymore and Bertinelli removed their makeup in front of the audience, who also went makeup-free, before they were joined by Anderson who explained what inspired her to stop wearing makeup.
“Isn’t it freeing? Doesn’t it feel free? I feel free,” Anderson said. “I mean, it’s taken a while to… I’ve had my little, you know, journey with it, but we all are our own worst critics.”
“I was at Paris Fashion Week and decided [if] I was just going to a fashion show, I didn’t need to compete with anybody. Like, why am I wasting three hours in a makeup chair when I have these beautiful Vivian Westwood clothes on,” she continued. “And I didn’t realize anyone would even notice. So then, when people started coming up to me and talking about it, I thought, ‘Well, this is a great message.’ You know, to really peel it back and find out who I was again. I wanted to remember who I was.”
“I started realizing, ‘Oh, I feel great as me,'” Anderson added. “This is the best time in my life. I feel so empowered and so free and so excited about life again.”
Also in the show, Gillian Anderson and Gayle King joined Barrymore and Bertinelli, also choosing to appear on camera without makeup.
The women opened up about their relationship with makeup, with Anderson revealing that while she isn’t afraid to go makeup-free on social media, she’s not totally immune to wanting to look a certain way.
“I am hiding behind my glasses a little bit,” she admitted. “I often don’t wear makeup when I’m doing like TikTok posts and stuff. But what I am aware of is the fact that I’m very aware of the lighting. I walk around seeing where the light is best before I push record. So that obviously means that I care and try and get the best lighting.”
“I don’t want to be a slave to it,” King said of makeup. “My mother used to say, ‘Don’t leave the house without makeup. Always have your makeup done.’ And I decided I don’t want to be that guy. I don’t.”
