Iconic comedian Duncan Norvelle died at the age of 66 on Thursday and his wife has revealed the cause in a touching message .

Duncan, who rose to fame on ITV's Saturday Royal variety show, which aired in the early 1980s. He coined the catchphrase "Chase Me" on the hit series before appearing on other shows such as Through The Keyhole.

As fans mourned his death, wife Linda Trevallion shared further information surrounding his death. Earlier in the day, she had changed her profile picture on Facebook to an image of the pair.

Linda explained that the star had died from a chest infection and sepsis. However, she said he wasn't experiencing any pain before his death.

Speaking to the Sun she added: "He's at peace and he's made millions of people laugh in his lifetime. I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about him."

She echoed the sentiment in a sweet statement to PA News. She said: "He was a gentle comedian, never swore on stage, he was a clean act, Sir Ken Dodd loved Duncan, because he said he was like him, ‘a good, clean act’, and he invited Duncan on his 80th birthday to be the entertainment for him." She added he “never made fun of” the audience, and “he only ever took the mickey out of himself”.

Other friends, family and fans were quick to pay tribute to the late star. One person who had previously met the family penned on social media: "The God Cast has been a wonderful gift to me, and has enabled me to meet some of my favorite people. One of those people was the comedian Duncan Norvelle.

"Sadly his family have recently announced that Duncan died earlier this morning. Duncan was incredibly gentle and kind and remains one of comedy heroes, and it was a privilege to spend some time in his company. I send my love and prayers to Linda."

Another close friend added: "Duncan Norvelle has sadly passed away aged only 66 Duncan was a dear friend a great entertainer a character who was a major star on TV and live shows in theatres, Duncan you will be greatly missed."
