Being a celebrity comes with constant attention—both positive and negative—and Ariana Grande knows this all too well. From praise and personal speculation to outright criticism, the pop icon has often found herself under the microscope, with her body being a frequent topic of discussion among online commenters. Over the years, the former child star has been vocal about her experiences with body shaming and the boundaries she’s worked hard to establish.
In December 2024, an interview with Ariana went viral after a French journalist and influencer brought up a parallel between the singer and her character from Wicked, Glinda. As Glinda often feels pressured to appear “perfect,” the journalist asked how Ariana has navigated similar expectations in her own life.
“My goodness,” Ariana began, her voice breaking as she teared up. After taking a moment to gather herself—with support from her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo—she responded, “It’s just… a good question, because I’ve been doing this in front of the public and been a specimen in a petri dish, really, since I was 16 or 17.”
“I have heard it all,” the Victorious alum continued. “I have heard every version of it, of what’s wrong with me, and then you fix it and it’s wrong for different reasons.”
The singer-songwriter acknowledged that escaping such criticism can feel sometimes nearly impossible, adding, “It’s hard to protect yourself from that noise.” She went on to address the broader issue, saying, “I think in today’s society, there is a comfortability that we shouldn’t have, at all, commenting on others’ looks, appearance, what they think is going on behind the scenes, or health, or how they present themselves. From what you’re wearing, to your body, to your face, to your everything.”
Ariana emphasized the harm caused by such commentary: “I think it’s dangerous for all parties involved. And I think that I’m really lucky to have the support system that I have and to just know and trust that I am beautiful,” she added. “No one has the right to say s—t.”
