Fair City star Nyree Yergainharsian welcomes second son - and opens up about return to the show

Fair City's Nyree Yergainharsian says getting the balance right between home life and acting on the show is definitely tricky as a mum of two young boys.

The actress, best known for playing Carrigstown's Melanie, went on maternity leave last spring after the birth of her second son, but now she is back on screen - and Melanie has turned somewhat nasty.

She also opened up about playing such a complex character and how she gets on with the rest of the cast.

Nyree told RSVP Live: "Getting the balance right is definitely tricky, I will say that. It is probably because my sons are so young.

"There are so many working families out there and they know that it is a real juggle. But you find your groove.

"It can be hard with sleepless nights. I have a really supportive husband and co-parent and that is the way we make it work."

She added: "Everything is about balance. I was off for so long, so I was happy to go back in and see everyone again.

"When there is something meaty going on with your character and you are turning into a bit of baddie, there is a bit of craic going on.

"It is really nice to be a part of that group because you miss them after a while."

Nyree loves that she can do both - appear on Fair City and be there for her family at home.

She said: "It is so important to have that. I was so happy with having a few months off, but I am also happy to be going back in and out. I am really lucky to have the best worlds."

Melanie has taken a turn over the last 18 months and she has become a very different person.

Nyree explained: "After years and years of being the moral compass for everyone else around she’s showing another side to herself.

"It is exciting to play her now after years of her being so straight laced. Things took a turn about a year ago.

"I am not sure exactly where this is heading, but she is definitely showing another side to her. That is fun for people to watch."

The actress loves playing such a complex character.

She said: "I like that she is quite cunning and she can be very sly. The extremes are always more fun to play because you can really get your teeth into them.

"The filthy looks between Melanie and Kira are flying.

"Lynseyanne Mulvey, who plays Kira, and I are having great fun doing eyebrow acting. Anything that mixes things up is good."

Nyree was nervous about going back to work after her maternity leave, but she slotted in to the cast perfectly once again.

She said: "Even if you are off for a little while because of your storyline or if you are working on something else, it does feel like the first day back at school.

"That lasts for about a minute. When you take time off work, you slot back in very quickly."
