Fans stunned after finding out Brenda Lee's real age when recording festive classic

If you know your Christmas tunes, chances are you will have heard of Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee. The 1958 hit classic has been covered by a number of artists over the years and has become a historical festive soundtrack.

The original hit-maker was American singer Brenda Lee, who was born as Brenda Mae Tarpley. However, fans have been left stunned after finding out how young Brenda was when she recorded the song.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree was released when Brenda was just 13 years old. At the time, the petite singer was known for her big voice and raspy vocals which made her sound more mature.

Fans have been left is disbelief over the revelation, with one TikTok user taking to the social media platform and saying: "Me remembering this is literally a 13-year-old child singing and not a 60-year-old woman."

One person commented: "You are joking," whilst someone else similarly said: "I was today years old when I found this out."

A third also said on X: "This has blown my mind…Brenda Lee. Singing this - which you all hear every year - at the age of 13. I thought it was some middle aged woman!"

The singer recently celebrated her 80th birthday. Brenda achieved her first hit single was she was only 12 and has sold over 100 million records globally.

In 2023, she was named by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest singers of all time.

In recent news, Brenda's festive hit made it to Number Six of the Official Charts in the United Kingdom.

Wham! claimed the Christmas number one spot once again this year with their winter classic, Last Christmas.

Last year, the pop duo topped the leaderboard with their classic festive hit, despite being released 39 years ago. The song completed the longest journey ever to Christmas number 1 and has 1.5 billion streams online.

The band were overwhelming favourites to once again be top of the charts at Christmas this year, and for the first time ever they managed to go back to back.

Meanwhile, Gracie Abrams came close to spoiling the party with her song, That's So True, in second place.
