Teams are successful when everyone knows their roles. Ferg recently spoke about why he didn’t mind being viewed as under A$AP Rocky when A$AP Mob first broke through.
The Harlem rapper appeared on High Level Conversations, a web series hosted by Earn Your Leisure, and reflected on getting his start in music. Rocky, who he admitted “had more skin in the game,” was their frontman and Ferg respected him as such.
“He wanted to do it first,” the “New Level” rapper said. “He’s the one who got the label deal, he’s the one who signed the artists and he’s the one who had all of the relationships first. So, of course, he’s going to be ahead of everybody. And, in fact, we put him on a pedestal–’Yo, break open this door for us’ so that’s my understanding of it.”
Ferg was fine handling the art design for their collective and played “the passenger side” as he soaked in the information he gained while sitting in meetings with A$AP Rocky. “I used to go to meetings with him, sit downs with Adidas and see how he maneuver and how he’s talking to these people,” he added. “I used to like–even quiet time, like ‘Yo, what is he observing? What is he looking at?’ I’m just learning the way. There’s gigs that he wouldn’t pick up that I was able to eat off of.”
His time coming up under Rocky helped him to understand his role and capitalize on the right opportunities. “I knew how to wait my turn,” he said. “And I knew what I was bringing to the game is different, my music is different, my energy is different. It’s a preference thing, it’s like football players might be listening more to me than Rocky or whatever the case may be.”
Though Ferg dropped the A$AP from his rapper name, his bond with the A$AP Mob still exists. “Ferg is very much still part of the Mob, and is A$AP Ferg within A$AP Mob,” Roc Nation shared in a statement. “Ferg as an individual artist and with his solo career is Ferg.” He put the stamp on the new era of his career with his November album Darold, a 12-track effort featuring Future, Mary J. Blige, Coco Jones, and more. Listen below.
