Health authorities in Bengaluru have confirmed a case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in an eight-month-old baby, marking one of the rare reports of the virus in India. While the child has no travel history (as per a report from News18), the case has drawn attention due to ongoing concerns about respiratory illnesses globally.

Here’s a closer look at the developments, what HMPV is, and how to protect yourself.

First Case of Human Metapneumovirus

What is HMPV, and How Does it Spread?

Human Metapneumovirus, or HMPV, is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the common cold. It primarily affects young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. According to the CDC, HMPV spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. Discovered only in 2001, the virus is now recognized as a significant contributor to upper and lower respiratory infections.

The Bengaluru Case and Broader Implications

The eight-month-old patient reportedly has no travel history, and health authorities have informed the Union Health Ministry. While it remains unclear whether this case is linked to the HMPV strain currently causing a spike in China, Indian health officials maintain that there is no unusual surge in respiratory illnesses across the country.

The Union Health Ministry has stated that surveillance systems indicate normal patterns for respiratory diseases, especially given the ongoing flu season. However, it has requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide timely updates on the global situation.

Global Concerns Over Respiratory Illnesses

China has recently reported a rise in respiratory illnesses, including those caused by influenza, RSV, and HMPV. Indian officials conducted a joint monitoring meeting to assess the situation and concluded that such surges are typical during flu season. A senior official emphasized that India is closely monitoring the situation and validating information as it becomes available.

Preventing the Spread of HMPV

Health experts advise the public to follow standard precautions to prevent respiratory infections. These include maintaining good respiratory hygiene, such as covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and avoiding close contact with others if you feel unwell.

Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, noted that HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses and typically causes mild symptoms. He recommends using over-the-counter medications for cold and fever while adhering to respiratory etiquette to limit the spread of infections.
