First baseman Pete Alonso entered this winter with high hopes for his next contract. But with spring training a little over a month away, the only reported offer he's received is a three-year, $90 million deal from the New York Mets. Will Alonso and the Mets find a way to get a deal done or is the slugger headed elsewhere for 2025 and beyond?
The Polar Bear has been a fixture in New York's lineup since his 2019 National League Rookie of the Year campaign. His 226 home runs already rank third in franchise history. Although his 2024 campaign was a step back from typical production, he still slugged 34 home runs with 88 RBI.
Alonso also found another gear during the Mets' postseason run. He hit .273/.431/.568 with four homers, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in 13 games. New York appears to be the most obvious fit for the 30-year-old based on how the market has moved in recent weeks.
CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson thinks the slugger will remain in Queens.
"Say it with me now: Modern front offices do not value non-elite right-handed first basemen. For as productive and talented as Alonso is, it never seemed likely that he would prove to be the exception," Anderson wrote. "The one wild-card scenario, I suppose, was if a new executive (say, Buster Posey) eschewed that thinking to add a proven run producer to their lineup. That hasn't happened yet, though, and the longer this drags on the more likely I think Alonso is to return to the Mets."
The San Francisco Giants could be the biggest threat to the Mets re-signing Alonso. They just lost the Corbin Burnes sweepstakes and could pivot to continue adding to their lineup. Tim Britton of The Athletic projected a five-year, $140 million deal for Alonso this winter.
