Oprah might have endorsed Kamala Harris, but her one-time TV companion is swinging for the other side.

Dr Phil McGraw, best known as simply Dr Phil, spoke at the Republican campaign rally in New York on October 27, throwing his support behind Donald Trump for president.

The TV personality and author told the crowd Trump is "tough as an old Army boot" and denied the suggestion he is a bully.

"There has to be an imbalance of power [for someone to be labelled a bully], and when there's not, it's just called a debate, and he's just better at it than anybody else," he said.

"Whoever he talks to, they've got a microphone, they've got on their big-boy pants, they've got a stage. He's just better at it."

McGraw said he didn't "like or agree" with everything Trump says, adding, "no human is perfect".

"You don't have to love everything about someone in order to love them," he continued.

"He's got lots of enemies, different groups that are scared, and between them, they have impeached him, indicted him, raided him, railroaded him, shot him and sued him.

"And where is he? He is still standing."

"The last thing he needs is some celebrity endorsement," McGraw added.

"What the hell do I know? I know I'm no celebrity to begin with, and celebrities don't know anything about policies or politics
