From Trace urging his famous father to 'get help' to Billy Ray's public message to Miley: Inside the Cyrus family drama

3 hours ago 5

Billy Ray Cyrus and his family have made headlines recently for family "drama" that has played out in public, amid rumours of a rift and estrangement.

Only days ago, one of the singer's sons shared an open letter urging his father to "get help" – allegedly receiving threats of legal action from Billy Ray – and on Monday, Miley Cyrus appeared at the Grammys with her mother at her side.

However, the family has been making headlines for almost three years now. Here, 9honey Celebrity takes a look at the events that have unfolded.

A who's who of the Cyrus family

The family includes Billy Ray and ex-wife Tish Cyrus' children Miley, 32, Braison, 30, and Noah, 25.

Tish is also mum to Brandi, 37, and Trace, 35, who Billy Ray adopted. Billy Ray is also father to son Christopher Cody, 32, who he welcomed from a previous relationship.

Tish filed for divorce from Billy Ray in April 2022. They married back in 1993.

In a joint statement shared to People at the time, the pair said: "It is after 30 years, five amazing children and a lifetime of memories, we have decided to go our separate ways — not with sadness, but with love in our hearts."

They added they were "proud" of their family and insisted they would "always be family".

So, when did the rumours of a rift begin?

Rift speculation began in 2023 when Noah and brother Braison reportedly skipped their mother's wedding to head to Walmart.

According to Page Six, the pair failed to show at Tish's wedding to Aussie actor Dominic Purcell, which was held at a private residence in Malibu, California, on August 19, 2023.

Instead Noah, 25, shared a series of photos on social media of her outing to Walmart and a coffee shop, with Braison, 30, even wearing a T-shirt with an old picture of Billy Ray emblazoned on the front.

According to multiple reports, Miley played a special part in the ceremony and was Maid of Honour.

Miley's siblings Trace and Brandi were also reportedly in the wedding party.

Did Billy Ray remarry?

Last year, it was reported Billy Ray, who has an estimated net worth of $16 million, had filed for divorce after just seven months of marriage to Aussie singer Firerose.

People reported it has obtained documents revealing Cyrus filed for divorce on May 22, allegedly citing "irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct".

What's happened recently?

Billy Ray's adopted son Trace Cyrus, 35, in January shared a message to his singer father in a public post on Instagram after his performance at Donald Trump's inaugural ball.

Trace then alleged his father "threatened" him "with legal action" after he said he wanted his father to "get help".

Now, Achy Breaky Heart singer Billy Ray, 63, has reacted to daughter Miley Cyrus' Grammy win after she and Beyoncé took home Best Country Dup/Groupe Performance for II Most Wanted at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

In his post on Monday, Billy Ray said how "proud" he was of Miley, 32, for her win.

"Congratulations @mileycyrus and @beyonce on their well-deserved @recordingacademy Grammy wins! 🎶 Couldn't be prouder!!!❤️🎉 🎈," Cyrus wrote.

It's believed Miley, who took her mother to the star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles, "liked" the post.

In November last year, Billy Ray also publicly wished his daughter a happy birthday, sharing flashback photographs of the pair together and some more recent snaps.

"Happy Birthday Mile!!! Hope it's the best one ever !(I know I dropped the "y". That's what I called @mileycyrus most of her life. ❤️)," he wrote.

Sources told Page Six Miley has "no interest" in fixing her relationship with her country singer dad, and that she found his Inauguration ball performance "concerning".

However, a source told People Miley is keen on keeping out of the family drama.

"Miley used to feel overwhelmed by the family drama. She worked hard to remove herself. She's not about to get involved again," the source said.

What has Miley said about her dad?

It comes after Miley spoke about her relationship with her dad and her mother on Netflix's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.

When asked if there is an "estrangement" with her dad, she said: "I think, what is so beautiful is that my parents, they served their children, and I know this. My parents served us and sacrificed so much for us. Anything we dreamed of, they made possible."

She said her and her dad think the same in terms of being artists but admitted, "I also inherited the narcissism from my father".

What did Trace Cyrus say about Billy Ray?

Trace, who is also a musician, shared a public message to his father.

After saying how much he idolised Billy Ray growing up, he added: "Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognise now. It seems this world has beaten you down and it's become obvious to everyone but you."

"You may be upset with me for posting this but I really could care less at this point. Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you've pushed all of us away.

"Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven't even been there for her. That's your baby girl. She deserves better. Somehow just like me she still idolises you though."

He said the message comes from a "place of love," he claimed in part of his post: "We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You're not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it."

"As I write this with tears in my eyes I hope you realise this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon. I love you Dad. We haven't talked in a while but I'm over a year and half clean from alcohol."

"...I don't know what you're struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I'd love to help you if you would open up and receive the help."

In a follow up post, he alleged he was threatened with legal action and called it a "disgrace".
