Who needs a brand-new gown when you can choose a design from the golden era of Paris haute couture? A trio of A-list actresses may have employed this thinking with their red-carpet choices for the 2025 Golden Globes, as fashion from the archives — which also checks the feel-good box of sustainability — has quickly revealed itself as one of the night’s style trends.
Wicked star Ariana Grande is wearing a gown she fell in love with at Lily et Cie in Beverly Hills to this year’s show, the boutique that specializes in archive fashion. Her pale yellow silk gown with a hand-beaded bodice is from the Spring/Summer 1966 collection by Hubert de Givenchy, created during the height of the couturier’s friendship with Audrey Hepburn.
“Fashion like this didn’t just happen by chance — it was the result of one of the most legendary collaborations in fashion and film history,” says Rita Watnick, owner of Lily et Cie. “The dress was unworn. It still had the original mode depose seal in place on the dress. It came from the wife of a very formidable old school studio head’s wife. I bought really fabulous museum pieces from her.”
Watnick adds that while the gown is almost 60 years old, it seems tailor-made for Grande. “The merger of young Hollywood with Givenchy, the elegant master of devastating chic, seems infinitely logical, timeless and ultra-modern, if not futuristic” Watnick tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Givenchy embraced youth culture. I am certain he would love this look on Ariana.”
Elle Fanning’s custom ballgown is a recreation from a Pierre Balmain haute-couture gown from the couturier’s Fall/Winter 1953 collection, dubbed a “reversed Champagne flute” at the time. Fanning’s belted gown is crafted of draped satin and a beaded animal-print molded bustier, while the original was made using tulle and fur. The beaded animal print, meanwhile, also can been found in the house’s Pre-Fall 2025 collection.
Also wearing an archived piece tonight: Anya Taylor-Joy, who is wearing a look from the Dior archives. Taylor-Joy has been a Dior global ambassador since 2021.
