Golden Globes: Colman Domingo Brings the Flair (and Expertly Tied Silk Tie) in Valentino

Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) consistently earns top honors for his style on red carpets, and his attendance at the 2025 Golden Globes should be no exception. Among the details that went into the best actor nominee’s Valentino ensemble, fashion fans should appreciate the chic flair of his silk tie in particular.

“I have to brag on Wayman for a moment,” noted Micah McDonald, who alongside Wayman Bannerman has worked with Domingo for three years. “I have never met anyone who ties a better bow than Wayman, and with a brand like Valentino, that’s a talent. I was trying to tie it myself tonight [during a fitting], and all of a sudden I noticed the room had gotten quiet. Then Wayman walked in and immediately took over. He has an ability to take that tie and elevate it to another level.”

Bannerman clearly was touched by the sentiment. “I am so honored, Micah,” he added as the pair spoke with The Hollywood Reporter exclusively on Saturday evening.

The duo indeed has created some exceptional looks for Domingo since they partnered with him after connecting through mutual friends. “At one point we decided to meet up for lunch and talk as three men who love and adore fashion, and immediately we could see there was a real synergy between us,” Bannerman recalled. “From that conversation, it was clear we should be collaborating together. What we both love about Colman is that he’s an open canvas in terms of what fashion can create. He’ll come in and try on multiple looks, and he’s not afraid to push boundaries. His style has become an array of storytelling, elevated and accelerated.”

For this year’s Golden Globes, that translates to a black Valentino tuxedo designed by Alessandro Michele, who was appointed creative director of Valentino in March 2024. But don’t expect anything basic: McDonald called the look “a rich, staunch, beautifully tailored tuxedo with a touch of romance and a touch of imagination,” while Bannerman noted that evening suit puts an emphasis on “nuance, modernizing the classic black tuxedo.”

Domingo, of course, is no stranger to wearing the Italian label, having garnered fawning headlines for a mustard-hued suit, pale blue shirt and textural gold overcoat he wore to the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, where he was a best actor nominee for 2023’s Rustin. “There is definitely a comfort level there,” Bannerman says about working with Valentino. “There is a celebratory element that the brand brings to menswear fashion, and it’s always a joyous moment when we connect with Alessandro and a custom creation. So many influences and voices can be expressed through fashion, and Alessandro is not afraid to find the meeting point for those multiple elements.”

“Alessandro and Colman definitely became kindred spirits,” McDonald added, “and there’s another level of pride in that, when you can wear clothing created by someone you believe in on a human level.”

To accessorize the suit, the duo has added a Valentino evening shoe Bannerman called “classic and romantic,” a diamond-embellished watch by Omega, and diamond jewelry by Boucheron. “The jewelry is so stunning, statement rings along with some really interesting studs,” Bannerman said Saturday night. “The look is unique, which also makes it classic Colman.”

If it sounds like the power-stylist combination of Wayman + Micah believe Colman Domingo to be a dream client, that’s an on-point assessment. “Our fittings are always super fun, because he’s such a free spirit and adores fashion,” Bannerman explained. “We try a lot of things in fittings — different colors and silhouettes, mixing prints and patterns together, we play with shapes — and Colman’s always all for it, and we never take very long, because we move through things organically. We’re all just so in sync.”

McDonald agreed. “I truly believe Colman’s personality is a beautiful marriage of his lust for life and his level of gratitude for all that has come into his life,” he said. “When we’re working together, it’s clear he believes that it’s fun to be opulent, it’s fun to be expressive, to be boisterous. All of these things go into what he exudes and make what we do such a pleasure. He is a walking celebration.”
