If you were on YouTube back in 2018, chances are you remember the Sister Squad. Fans couldn’t get enough of the besties and constant collaborators made up of Ethan and Grayson Dolan, James Charles and Emma Chamberlain. The four YouTubers made multiple video collabs, documenting their adventures and making viewers wish for a hilarious friendship like theirs. However, the four creators went radio silent in 2019, and haven’t made a video together since. So, what happened to the iconic crew?!

Why Did the Sister Squad Break Up?
The Sister Squad seemed unstoppable, so when they disappeared from the internet in 2019, fans were left scratching their heads. Over time, though, the members dropped subtle hints about the split. James reflected on the group during a December 2020 career ranking video. He placed the Sister Squad in the “probably not again but happy for the experience” category and gave fans some insight.
“It was really, really cool to film these crazy over-the-top videos with, at the time, my best friends in the entire world,” James shared. “Basically, we were all just at very, very different parts of our careers and our lives, and we needed to go in different directions.”
The Dolan Twins also addressed the breakup in a July 2020 video, clearing up some fan theories. Shortly after, Emma chimed in on the possibility of a reunion. While she admitted to “reconnecting” with James, she kept it real about getting back on the same page with the Dolan Twins, saying she couldn’t make any promises.
Did Drama Cause the Breakup?
Speculation ran wild that James’ feud with Tati Westbrook might have led to the Sister Squad’s downfall. When Jeffree Star accused James of harassing Grayson, the internet practically exploded. But James wasn’t having it. In a tell-all video, he addressed the accusations with receipts and debunked the claims.
“I have to admit, bringing up Grayson Dolan was pretty clever. In the height of all these allegations and stories going around, both of the twins unfollowed me, not wanting to be associated [with the scandal],” James explained. “Fans started speculating that the rumors could be as to why. Too bad that, aside from our pre-planned collaborative jokes that happened in the Sister Squad videos — me and Grayson flirting — nothing ever happened between us. And when all this went down, I knew Jeffree was lying because the twins were two of the first people to call me and make sure I was OK.”
Still, fans couldn’t help but notice that the rest of the Sister Squad unfollowed James on social media not long after.
Was Emma Chamberlain and Ethan Dolan’s Relationship a Factor?
Let’s not forget the rumored romance between Emma and Ethan. While neither confirmed they were dating, fans have long believed there was more to their friendship. In January 2025, Emma opened up on her podcast,”Anything Goes,” about her first heartbreak, and fans are convinced she was talking about Ethan.
“That relationship felt like a lifetime to me,” Emma shared. “I thought they were my soulmate, and I’d never feel that same way again.”
Emma described the nine-month relationship as intense and life-changing, especially since it was her first love. “When things are new psychologically, time moves slower,” she explained. The breakup, though, hit her hard. “I thought I was going to die. I didn’t stop crying for two weeks.”
Even months later, Emma tried to rekindle things, but it didn’t work out. “He didn’t want to date me again,” she admitted. “He was clear he didn’t want to be exclusive, and I couldn’t handle that emotionally.”
