Pete Alonso and the New York Mets seem like the perfect reunion waiting to happen in free agency. So, what's going on? Why is Alonso unsigned?
FanSided's MLB insider Robert Murray has that answer. Murray is reporting one major difference in the contract discussions is keeping the two sides apart.
"While Alonso remains unsigned, the most likely option is that he re-signs with the New York Mets. It's just taking longer than either side would have preferred," Murray wrote. "So what's the holdup? It comes down to years."
The major difference here is opening up the possibility of Alonso signing a shorter-term deal that's worth a lot of money each season.
"While Alonso is looking for a long-term contract, the Mets have not been willing to offer the superstar slugger that," Murray wrote. "The best solution for both sides would be a short-term, high-average annual value contract that would allow Alonso to opt out after the first season. It's something that Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, has done in recent years – last year with Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs – and could pave the way for Alonso to return to Queens."
While these two sides are still very close to a deal, their disagreements have opened up the door for other teams to enter the $150 million Alonso sweepstakes.
The Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, and a few other teams are all within striking distance of making things very interesting for the Mets.
If one of these teams is willing to offer Alonso the long-term contract he's looking for, the Mets may not bring their star back in 2025.
Since they're so close to a deal and can't come to terms on the years, I would still heavily favor the Mets in the sweepstakes.
