A property expert has revealed that parking - or lack of - could be the reason your home is not selling.

While we assume the allure of a home rests on its curb appeal, it could actually lie more curbside, with many potential buyers turning their noses up at homes that lack adequate or convenient parking.

Terry Fisher, a property expert at leading home-buying service We Buy Any Home, says: “The availability of parking is often overlooked by sellers, but it’s one of the first things potential buyers notice.

“If they can’t easily park their car during a viewing, it sets a negative tone and could cost you a sale.”

According to Terry, parking is especially crucial in urban areas where there's a lot of competition for spaces. 

"Buyers are increasingly seeking homes that simplify their daily routines," he says.

“Convenient parking isn’t just a perk—it’s a necessity for many. Without it, buyers might pass on an otherwise perfect property.”

78% of households in England own at least one car, with 34% owning two or more, meaning parking has become a hot commodity when looking for a new home. 

Houses without a driveway, garage or easily accessible street parking are often seen as less desirable, particularly for commuting families.

“If you don’t have designated parking, explore options to mitigate the issue,” says Terry. 

“Secure a parking permit or consider renting a nearby space temporarily to reassure buyers.”

While parking is high on the list of overlooked factors when putting your home on the market, there are several others to take into consideration.

Neglecting minor repairs can give the impression of a poorly maintained property and over-personalised or cluttered decor can leave buyers finding it difficult to see themselves in the home.

“Neutralise your home to make it appealing to a broad audience," says Terry.

"Also, tackle small but noticeable repairs like squeaky doors or dripping taps—it shows buyers you’ve cared for the property.”

He adds: “A tidy garden, clean windows, and a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference when buyers pull up outside.”
