Between cordyceps coffee, mushroom chocolate, psilocybin retreats, and psychedelic therapy, there's no question that mushrooms are all the rage in the wellness world. But thanks to the recent emergence of mushroom-shaped sex toys, it appears mushrooms are having a moment in the sexual wellness world, too.
Mushroom sex toys are a broad category of sex toys that are shaped or textured like mushrooms or have a mushroom-inspired print. According to sex expert Suzannah Weiss, the reason we're seeing more of these products on the market is because of the changing cultural attitude of mushrooms.
In recent years, psychedelic mushrooms have become less stigmatized, as people see them as a way to minimize harm and boost overall well-being. "As attitudes toward mushrooms are changing, certain industries begin incorporating them," Weiss says. The fashion industry does this through mushroom print paraphernalia, the beauty industry does this by offering mushroom-infused skin-care products and mushroom blond hair, and the pleasure product industry does this through mushroom-shaped sex toys, Weiss says.
Given that mushrooms have only started to go mainstream in the last year, there aren't quite as many sex toys in the fungi department as there are sex toy types that have been around for decades (like wand vibrators). But the early additions to the trend deserve a place in your sex toy collection, according to certified sex educators. Ahead, everything you should know about the mushroom sex toy trend, including the best five to shop now.

What Are Mushroom Sex Toys?
Mushroom sex toys are toys that are shaped, textured, or otherwise designed with mushrooms in mind. While arousal oils or lubricants that are infused with cordyceps could also qualify, it's important to note that mushroom sex toys are not ingestible or hallucinatory. The only mind-altering that might occur will be from any orgasms these toys facilitate.
A benefit of using these mushroom sex toys is that they can infuse your sex life with a sense of play. "Using pleasure products that are shaped like mushrooms can add some fun and lightheartedness to the overall sexual experience," sex educator Anna Richards says. This can be particularly helpful for people who find themselves spectatoring or getting stuck in their head during sex.
Another potential benefit of mushroom sex toys is that they can be enjoyed by individuals who want to use a sex toy shaped like a body part, as well as those who don't. Richards explains that most of the mushroom sex toys currently on the market look like cartoon drawings. This can be appealing, as "involving a toy that looks like a body part can make some people feel like a whole other person is in the room." During partnered play, a realistic sex toy might bring an individual's insecurities about the look, shape, or size of their genitals, she adds. Not to mention, sex toys that don't look like body parts are also relatively discrete. "This can help relieve anxiety someone has," Richards adds.
However, there are "some mushroom sex toys that have a penis-like shape, thanks to their capped head and stem," Weiss says. This can be part of the fun for those who have previously had pleasure sexual experiences with a penis, as well as those who like to fantasize as such. Individuals who consider mushrooms phallic and are drawn to that penile shape should consider a mushroom-inspired dildo, such as the Glow-in-the-Dark Dildo ($39).
How to Use a Mushroom Sex Toy
There is one rule when using mushroom sex toys: don't put the mushroom sex toy in your booty unless it has a flared base that marks the toy as anal-safe. Beyond that, how you use your mushroom toy will depend on its design.
If your shroom selection has a textured mushroom top, like the Nasstoys Mushroom Shaped Vibrator ($42), Richard suggests milking that texture for all its worth. "Bumps and indentations can provide more varied and exciting sensations during clitoral, nipple, and other external stimulation," she says. Meanwhile, if your mushroom sex toy is squishy, as is the case with the Shroomie Rechargeable Mushroom Vibrator ($59), she suggests continuously moving the toy around until you find your perfect angle. Squishy sex toys mold to your body, so it's all about experimenting with positions, she explains.
No matter how your mushroom sex toy is shaped or designed, Richards also suggests using the toys with lubricant. A squirt of store-bought lube will help the shroom slide over your erogenous zones, which will increase overall pleasure and decrease unwanted friction and sticking. All of the mushroom sex toys below are made from silicone and, therefore, safe to use with water-based and oil-based sex toys. (Avoid silicone-based lubricants, however, because they cannot be used with silicone toys, as the silicone sticks to itself.)

The Best Mushroom Sex Toy: Shroomie Rechargeable Mushroom Vibrator ($59)
The podium pick for a mushroom-inspired pleasure product is the aptly named Shroomie. Essentially a mini wand vibrator, Shroomie's stem doubles as a handle while its cap functions as an external vibrator. The bulbous shape of the mushroom hat helps disperse the 15 different vibration settings across the entire head of the toy, sex expert Marla Renee Stewart says. "This is especially ideal if you are a beginner, as it keeps the vibrations from being too powerful or pinpointed," she adds. Also noteworthy is that Shroomie is made from liquid silicone that is squishy in feel, soft to the touch, and fully waterproof.
The Best Mushroom Sex Toy Runner-Up: Nasstoys Mushroom Shaped Vibrator ($42)
This mushroom-inspired sex toy offers all the convenience of a travel-friendly size of a bullet vibrator with all the bliss of a textured toy. Just under six inches long, this external vibrator is small enough to fit in your pocket or purse but strong enough to induce orgasm after orgasm. It has 10 different vibrating functions for you to choose from and a ridged head that helps stimulate your most nerve-dense spots. The Nasstoy Mushroom Shaped Vibrator is made of medical-grade silicone and is fully waterproof, making it ideal for bathtub masturbators. Plus, it is operated by a single button, which makes it accessible to those of us who aren't so tech-savvy.
The Best Mushroom Bullet Vibrator: Jessi Trippy Mushroom Mini Bullet ($34)
The Jessi Trippy Mushroom Mini Bullet is the perfect example of a tiny toy that can pack a pleasurable punch. Although this buzzy bullet vibrator is just three inches, its ten different vibration patterns are surprisingly powerful, and the bullet boasts an impressive two-hour run time, Stewart says. "Since it's rumbly, it's especially great to use externally or vaginally for internal clitoral pleasure," she adds. The toy is coated in waterproof silicone, which makes it ideal for anyone who wants to feel tripped out on pleasure on or off land. Pegging enthusiasts will also be happy to know that this mini bullet fits the built-in pocket of most strap-on harnesses, though, of course, that will hide its cute design.
The Best Mushroom Dildo: Glow Stick Mushroom Glow-in-the-Dark Dildo ($39)
If a sense of play is what's powering your interest in playing with portobello pleasure products, look no further than the Glow Stick Mushroom Dildo. "Not only is this dildo smooth, but it also has a beautiful glow-in-the-dark factor for a playful ambiance," Stewart says. An anal-safe pick, this dildo has a flared base that doubles as a suction. This allows you to use it in various ways, including in a harness or attached to a surface like a chair or tub ledge, she explains. Just six inches long, this glow-in-the-dark option works well for people newer to penetration as well.
The Best Anal Mushroom Sex Toy: The SelfDelve Fly Agaric Butt Plug ($99)
Your anal play just got a whole lot more wild with this fantasy butt plug. With its red and white polka dot heat and grassy green base, this sex toy is modeled after the mushrooms that decorate the pages of picture books. Further infusing the plug with a sense of fantasy is that it changes colors. The silicone is infused with body-safe thermochromic pigments that turn neon-yellow when warmed. People new to anal play will be happy to hear that the toy is beginner-friendly. Measuring four inches long and one inch thick, this plug is no bigger than a finger.
