What's New

Sports fans will be able to celebrate the first day of 2025 with a packed viewing schedule as six powerhouses battle in three College Football Playoff (CFP) quarterfinals.

Why It Matters

In the New Year's Day quarters, the No. 4 Texas Longhorns and No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils will square off in the Peach Bowl; the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes will aim to knock off the No. 1 Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl; and the No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.

On New Year's Eve, the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions and No. 8 Boise State Broncos tangled during the Fiesta Bowl in the first quarterfinal.

The winners will advance to the CFP semifinals on January 9 and January 10. The Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl winners will clash in one, and the other will see the Peach Bowl and Rose Bowl winners match up.

This year is the first 12-team CFP. The six highest-ranked conference champions earned automatic bids, and the top four overall teams received a first-round bye to the quarterfinals.

Who Is Favored to Win?

Peach Bowl: The Longhorns are coming off a 38-24 victory over Clemson in the first round of the playoffs. Offensively, Texas is ranked 8th in the SP+ rating system. Arizona State has experienced a major turnaround this season. The Sun Devils entered the playoffs on a six-game winning streak. The spread for the Peach Bowl is Texas at -13.5, and the over/under is 52.5 points, according to BetMGM.

Rose Bowl: Ohio State's offense ranks in the top 10 and the Buckeyes' secondary is seeing the fifth-fewest deep passes in the nation. Oregon has a defensive line that ranks 5th nationally. The battle is a rematch of October 12, when the Ducks edged the Buckeyes 32-31. The spread has Ohio State at -2.5, and the over/under is 54.5 points, according to BetMGM.

Sugar Bowl: This will be the fourth-ever meeting between Georgia and the Fighting Irish, with the Bulldogs winning all three previous games. But Georgia will be missing starting quarterback Carson Beck, who could be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury. Notre Dame is riding an 11-game winning streak and has faced fewer third downs than any team in the country this season. The spread has Georgia at -1.5, and the over/under is 44.5 points, according to BetMGM.
