Every bride remembers the special, and nerve-wracking, moment they walked down the aisle toward their spouse, ready to start the ceremony. But one newlywed has left social media in stitches with her awkward reaction as she approached her soon-to-be husband.
On July 27, Holly Holroyd wed Glyn Holroyd in Salford, United Kingdom, in front of their friends and family. As Holly, 25, and her dad reached the front, Glyn, 27, reached out his hand to shake his father-in-law's hand and to thank him for escorting his daughter. The groom then turned to his bride and held out a steadying hand for her to take—which she hilariously misunderstood.
Unfortunately for Holly, she assumed her husband was reaching his hand out to give her a handshake, too. She was very perplexed by it, telling Newsweek that she remembers thinking to herself, "this is weird, but OK," and she offered her hand to shake his in return. It was perhaps not the ideal way to begin the ceremony by accidentally shaking hands, but the awkward moment certainly made them laugh.
Holly said: "As my dad was walking me down the aisle, my soon-to-be-husband went to give him a handshake, and then went to hold my hand to help me around the chairs. However, I was so flustered and overwhelmed, I thought he was also going in for a handshake from me as well."
While Holly might have hoped no one saw it happen, the unfortunate moment was caught on camera. When she watched it back, she couldn't help but laugh at her mistake, and even heard her sister and the best man laughing in the clip.
Thankfully, Holly wasn't the only one to mess up during the ceremony, as Glyn made his own blunder shortly after. Everyone knows the famous wedding vows are "I do," but not Glyn, who mistakenly said "yes" instead. Holly said that was rather awkward, but it made her feel better about her mishap.
Holly saw the funny side to the embarrassing handshake and shared the video on TikTok (@hollyangelholroyd). Alongside it, she wrote: "I can't escape the awkwardness."
The viral clip has left internet users in hysterics, leading to more than 649,100 views and over 10,800 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. The reaction is beyond anything Holly expected, as she only imagined it would be seen by close friends and family.
"My husband and I am generally quite awkward people, so it made me laugh looking back," Holly told Newsweek. "The video confirmed my original thoughts that it looked like he was going in for a handshake, and the fact you can see how my hand grabbed his is ever funnier.
"I didn't expect it to get so many views, but the likes and comments came flooding in quite quickly. A lot of people found it funny, and some even shared their own awkward wedding-day moments, which made me feel better," Holly continued.
Since going viral on TikTok, many internet users lauded the awkward blunder and couldn't get enough of the hilarious clip.
One comment reads: "I laughed way to much at this cause this would be me."
Another person joked: "My husband shouted 'I DO' half way through our vows."
A third TikTok user wrote: "To be fair, it did kind of look like he was going in for a handshake with you as well."
