Winter is just around the corner, meaning homes across the country are getting colder.

With energy bills on the rise, many households are looking to alternative methods to keep warm instead of using the heating.

Whilst using the heating is essential in preventing mould within the home, there are other ways to keep yourself warm, according to Britons online.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook forum, Anna Hughes shared tips with the group on how she keeps warm throughout the winter.

The group member said: “Just a tip for everyone worried about bills and keeping cold this winter, which is horrible that we even have to think of these things by the way.

“I’ve used a heated blanket for the last three years, mine is washable and it keeps me warm, it even has a timer on it, although I don’t use it when I sleep.

“I use it a couple of hours before bed and then lay it in my bed whilst I get ready to sleep and it warms it up so well.

“According to the blanket manufacturers, it costs around 1p per hour to run which is so cheap and I love it so much.

“Just thought I’d share in case anyone else is looking for a way to keep warm, I don’t use the heating when I get home from work now.”

It’s important not to turn the blankets up too hot when using them for lengthy periods of time as they may cause overheating.

Make sure to turn them off and unplug them too when not using them as well as not leaving the timer on when leaving the home.

Other group members also recommended an electric blanket with Deborah Jane noting: “I love my heated blanket, keeps my cats warm too.

“I bought mine from Curry’s but have seen them everywhere this year.”

Wendy Ned commented: “I bought three in the Black Friday sale last year, and I don’t use heating during the day anymore, they’re amazing.”

Other ways to keep warm during the winter months include doubling up on curtains as a barrier to keep the warmth in and the cold weather out.

Make sure to keep curtains closed all night long and open them up in the morning to let natural heat and light into the room.
