3 hours ago 3

President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated today as the nation's 47th president.

Why It Matters

Today's inauguration marks Trump's second term in office. This is the 60th presidential inauguration, and Trump will officially become both the 45th and 47th president of the United States.

The congressional joint session to count electoral votes was held earlier this month, and it was far less eventful than the certification four years ago, which was disrupted by a mob of Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to halt the count and overturn the election results. Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in November's presidential election, oversaw the session.

What Events Take Place on Inauguration Day?

Eight events typically take place on Inauguration Day.

By tradition, the outgoing president accompanies the president-elect to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony. Most presidents ride to their inaugurations, save for Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, who walked.

Next is the vice president's swearing-in ceremony, followed by the president's.

The new president then delivers an inaugural address. This tradition has taken place since President George Washington's inauguration in 1789. The speech length of the address has ranged from just 135 words from Washington to 8,445 words by William Henry Harrison, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

Today, the inaugural address is given on the West Front of the Capitol.

Then, there is the honorary departure of the outgoing president and first lady moving on to their post-presidential lives. An official signing ceremony also occurs with the newly sworn-in president in the President's Room, off the Senate Chamber in the Capitol.

Next, is a luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, followed by ceremonial military regiments, marching bands and floats down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.
