Inside Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar’s private life including 23-year marriage to fellow actor

Reports came yesterday that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works with none other than Sarah Michelle Gellar, so we’re going right back to 90s yesteryear to tell you all about the iconic actress’ life.

The last time supernatural slayer Buffy Summers was on our screens, we were unironically playing with Tamagotchis, with seven seasons of the show running from 1997 until 2003.

Deadline now reports that a follow-up series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with a writers room being planned – so it’s looking good for fans of the nostalgic show.

Zoom back to the 00s, and Sarah was everywhere with her towering boyfriend – and in 2002 husband – on her arm.

Here’s everything we know about Sarah and her husband of 23 years. While many showbiz relationships have less of a shelf life than Liz Truss did as PM, just how do they do it?!

Who is Sarah Michelle Gellar’s husband?

Freddie Prinze Jr is an actor and Sarah’s Scooby-Doo and I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star.

He was also in the 1999 film She’s All That, and is known in the Star Wars world as playing Kanan Jarrus in Rebels from 2014 to 2018.

Sarah and Freddie met in 1997 when filming the teen horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer, but they didn’t go on a date until 2000 – and they did so as a total accident.

‘We were friends for a very long time. We’d had many dinners before. And we were supposed to go with someone else, and the third person didn’t make it out and we decided to still go,’ the Buffy star told People Now in 2020.

‘We were just two people at dinner catching up,’ she added. ‘We had a long car ride and a long dinner and things just happened.’

Two years later the pair married in Mexico at El Careyes resort, with Sarah in a stunning strapless Vera Wang gown.

Also in 2002, the pair enjoyed a professional collaboration as Fred Jones and Daphne Blake in the live-action Scooby-Doo film.

Discussing the secret to their long-lasting relationship, Sarah told US Weekly in 2019 that it takes work.

‘I think the truth of any relationship is that, whether you’re a couple, whether you’re friends, whether you’re business partners, is you have to put the work into a relationship,’ she said.

‘It takes work to have a good friendship. You have to call and check in and dedicate that time, and most people aren’t willing to put that work in. So to have a successful relationship, whether it’s marriage, whether it’s friendship, whether it’s business, you have to put the time, if you want to see the results.’

She added that ‘to keep a relationship, you have to have stuff that’s private and things that are your own and between the two of you’.

Do they have children?

Freddie and Sarah welcomed their daughter Charlotte in 2009 and a son called Rocky in 2012.

In March, Sarah opened up about parenting struggles with online outlet She Knows, particularly when it comes to the online world.

‘My husband and I, we sit down for dinner at the table. There are no phones,’ she says. ‘We will all watch a show together. There are no phones. It’s those moments where we set the example. We connect. We make eye contact.’

On protecting her kids from technology, she said: ‘There are certain things where we can ask people that have been through it, “How did you handle this when I was a kid?” But this is a new frontier. And so we’re really sort of learning as we go, and I think that’s always incredibly challenging.’

In order to stay present for their children, the pair both made the decision to take a step back from acting and prioritise parenting.

Speaking to People, Gellar said: ‘I need to be here for these early formative years of my kids’ life. I needed that break to be the parent that I wanted to be.’

‘I’ve done some pretty amazing things. I’ve hosted Saturday Night Live. I’ve traveled the world,’ she added to Parade.

‘But for me, all that pales in comparison to bedtime [with my kids].’

Motherhood, she told the publication, ‘offered a missing part of myself that I never knew I was missing.’
