2 days ago 8

Nathan Carter has said Christmas in the Carter household is just like every other family's in Ireland and the UK.

He shared how the festive season works for them and why he found it difficult to host Christmas Day this year.

The country music star also recalled getting a very special present from Santa when he was a kid.

Nathan told RSVP Magazine: "We’re just like every other family in Ireland and the UK.

"We all eat too much on Christmas Day and then slob out on the couch after dinner is finished.

"There are always board games floating around and, of course, we also watch too much TV in the evening."

The country music star finds it hard to plan Christmas in advance because he is so busy with work.

He said: "Christmas in Ireland is great because it’s so relaxed, but I don’t have anywhere for my family to stay this year because I’m still renovating my house. I will probably just head home to Liverpool for that reason."

Just like most families, Nathan and his mum and dad, and his siblings, have strong in their household.

He said: "Normally, the men are on the washing up duty after dinner because my mum takes care of most of the cooking.

"The only thing she doesn’t do is the spuds because she burnt them one year and dinner was a disaster.

"My dad cooks them for us. My brother Jake and my sister Kiara do the dishes."

He added: "I cannot stand brussels sprouts – I hate them.

"I love pigs in blankets for starters. In the evening, I love a Terry’s chocolate orange and a glass of brandy or port."

Nathan just released a Christmas album and a Christmas song.

He said: "The single is an original song called Crazy Christmas, which I wrote a few years back.

"I absolutely love the tune to it. My favourite song, other than mine, has to be Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.

Does Fairytale Of New York fill him with nostalgia? "Yeah, it reminds me of Christmas when I was a kid.

"It also reminds me of being in nightclubs with my friends when I was 17 or 18. We used to all belt out the lyrics together and the song always fills me with great memories of being young."

Nathan can vividly remember Santa bringing him his first musical instrument.

He said: "I got an accordion at the age of four and, musically, it was the best thing I ever got in my life.

"I got to learn music from that moment on and my grandfather taught me how to play my first couple of tunes on it. That present changed everything for me."

Nathan is always last minute dot com when it comes to presents.

He said: "I head to the high street on Christmas Eve trying to get presents for people. Jake and I normally give each other a proper present and a joke present.

"A couple of years ago, he gave me my own calendar. He caught me out because he had it wrapped up in about 10 pieces of wrapping paper.

"He didn’t buy it either, he just nicked it out of the merch store. I’ve no idea what I want this year other than the roof being on my house and the renovations to be done!"
