Is There Mail on New Year's Day? UPS, USPS, FedEx Hours Today

2 days ago 3

New Year's Day is recognized as a federal holiday, and many offices, stores and restaurants will be closed.

Many Americans might be wondering how the mail schedule will be affected by the holiday.

Why It Matters

While many restaurants and stores remain open on New Year's Day, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is different because every year it suspends services until January 2.

USPS delivers mail and packages whether it's rain or shine, but some holidays mean mail will be delayed as postal workers take the day off and operations are halted.

What To Know

Is Mail Delivered on New Year's Day?

Don't expect your mail to arrive on New Year's Day because all package and mail deliveries will be delayed until Thursday.

Most banks and post offices will remain open on New Year's Eve.

Is the Post Office Open Today?

All post offices will be closed on New Year's Day. That means you'll have to wait until the following day to buy stamps or ship large items.

USPS has days off that are federal holidays, including New Year's Day and Christmas Day.

USPS, UPS, FedEx Deliveries

While USPS deliveries will be delayed, UPS and FedEx deliveries will be largely unavailable on Wednesday.

UPS pickup and delivery services will be suspended on New Year's Day, and many UPS stores will be closed as well. However, UPS Express Critical runs 365 days a year if you have an emergency package that needs to be delivered.

Likewise, FedEx pickup and delivery services are not running on Wednesday, with all FedEx office locations closed as well.

For special deliveries, FedEx Custom Critical is still available, as it is every other day of the year.

What People Are Saying

The USPS said on its website: "All Post Office locations will be closed Christmas Day (Wednesday, Dec. 25) and New Year's Day (Wednesday, Jan. 1). Regular Post Office hours and mail delivery will resume on the Thursday after each holiday."

UPS said on its website: "UPS is closed on New Year's (Jan 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 20), Independence Day (July 4), Thanksgiving (Nov 27), and Christmas Day (Dec 25). UPS Express Critical service is still available."

What Happens Next

Many retailers and some chain restaurants will also be closed on New Year's Day.

Chipotle is giving its employees the day off, which means customers will need to find a different restaurant if they have a burrito bowl craving.

Trader Joe's, Aldi and Costco will shut their doors for the holiday as well, but retail giants Walmart and Whole Foods will remain open for the day.
