There are fireworks for Vicky's character on the cobbles

Coronation Street’s Vicky Myers, who plays detective Lisa Swain on the famous cobbles, will be staying in on New Year's Eve, she tells OK! - with a 'glass of something and watch the New Year celebrations and fireworks" from the comfort of her own home. On the small screen, however, there'll be even more fireworks over New Year, as Vicky's on-screen character's relationship with factory boss Carla Connor, played by Alison King, is set to heat up significantly.

Regular Corrie fans will already be aware that the two women have been getting pretty close of late, something which began when Carla became a listening ear for the stressed-out detective as she managed her teenage daughter and the missing Lauren Bolton case. Just before Christmas, Carla announced to the factory workers that the two were now dating. But in the Rovers Return on New Year's Eve, Carla dials it up a notch and tells Lisa that she's actually fallen in love with her.

Carla and Lisa are set to take their relationship to a new level

“It absolutely floors Lisa,” Vicky tells us. “She’s just come in from work and goes to the Rovers to ring in the New Year. It takes her by surprise and she doesn’t return the sentiment. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel the same way, I just think she’s not quite ready. This is a massive step for her.”

Vicky, 48, joined the cast of Coronation Street in early 2024, after making occasional appearances for three years as police officer DS Swain- and ever since, the straight-talking detective has been involved in some meaty storylines, swiftly cementing herself as one of the viewing public's favourite new characters.

For the Stockport-born actress, who is currently single, Lisa is the first gay character she has played - and she confesses she’s been blown away by how viewers have responded to her same-sex love story. “I’ve had so many letters and messages, and people stopping to talk to me to share their stories, which is beautiful. I’ve spoken to many couples who have been in a similar situation, and a close friend and her wife spoke to me at length.

She maintains that her latest storyline is no woke exercise from the soap's creators, either. “This story wasn’t a tick-box exercise from Coronation Street. These are two women of a certain age, realising they have fallen for each other and coming to terms with that. It shows it can happen at any age and to anybody — love is love.”

Vicky, who has appeared in ITV's 2023 drama The Long Shadow, Casualty and Unforgotten, recently told Inside Soap that Lisa and Carla are "soulmates"., adding: "It's taken Lisa by surprise. She didn't want to trust her feelings, but there's definitely longevity there."
