Millions watched the final episode of Gavin and Stacey on Christmas Day, and to commemorate the landmark, co-creator James Corden shared touching snaps from behind the scenes
James Corden has posted a touching tribute to Gavin and Stacey after its finale.
The BBC sitcom finally came to an end on Christmas Day (December 25), as Nessa and Smithy finally tied the knot and brought the story to an end. The show was a massive hit, bringing in a whopping 12.3million viewers, based on overnight figures.
Now, as the cast look back at their final stint on Barry Island, co-creator James shared a number of behind the scenes snaps of the filming of the finale. This included the stars of the show at pivotal moments of the episode, as the 17-year-long series reached its climax.
In one heartbreaking snap James uploaded, James was seen walking with his arm around fellow creator Ruth Jones - all dressed in her Nessa gear - as the show took a break from filming. The pair were seen beaming with smiles at each other in the black-and-white snap, whilst a member of production grabbed a camera and began to film them as they walked away from the set.
A second pic uploaded to his social media included the cast of the show in Dave's iconic bus as the troupe hotfooted their way to Southampton in the crucial plot point. The snap - which included iconic cast members Rob Brydon and Joanna Page - saw everyone pile in on the bus as they waited to get the signal for another take.
Writing in the caption for the photo carousel, James reflected on what had been an emotional final few days of filming. He also paid tribute to viewers, who had compelled James and Ruth to write one final episode together.
"Here’s some behind the scenes photos from the special," he wrote in a post that he uploaded on Boxing Day (December 26). "Thank you so much to everyone who watched last night. It means more than you’ll know. All my love, James," followed by a kiss.
Fans were left in tears when Nessa and Smithy finally walked down the aisle together to say their "I dos", ending one of the longest cliffhangers in TV history. In other big storylines, Stacey and Jason's darling mum Gwen was able to find the love of her life with Nessa's former flame, Dave Coaches.
Following the airing of the show, Fat Friends star Ruth headed to social media, thanking fans for their dedication to the show. "I hope we did you proud," she wrote, "I'm not going to lie, I'm feeling a bit drained!"
Similarly, James added: "Tears all around. It was probably the most emotional film set I’ve ever been on and it was kind of wonderful."
Fans praised the episode for its storyline and answering many questions that had cropped up during the show's original one - including what happened during Nessa's proposal in the 2019 special. Leaving fans on a cliffhanger, it was revealed that Gavin, played by Matthew Horne, had interrupted the moment - and Nessa and Smithy never addressed the situation again.
