Jeremy Renner will open up about his near-fatal snowplow accident in his forthcoming book, My Next Breath

The Mayor of Kingstown star’s memoir will recount the accident and its aftermath “in blistering detail,” according to publisher Macmillan, while shedding light on his lengthy recovery process and the impact the experience has had on his life.

Macmillan states, “This retelling is not merely a gruesome account of what happened to him; it’s a call to action and a forged companionship between reader and author as Jeremy recounts his recovery journey and reflects on the impact of his suffering.”

Renner was left severely injured after trying to save his nephew when he was clearing snow at his Mt. Rose Highway area home in Nevada on New Year’s Day 2023. The accident occurred when an issue arose with the 14,300-pound snowcat’s parking break and he was pulled underneath the snowplow. After being “pronounced dead on the ice,” he was airlifted to a Reno-area hospital and received surgery for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.

In My Next Breath, Renner’s writing will tap into his “essence of profound transformation,” while serving as “a testament to the human spirit and its capacity to endure, evolve and find purpose in the face of unimaginable adversity.” The memoir will be released on April 29.

Renner has been extremely candid in sharing details about his recovery process and took to Instagram at the time to share updates on his condition. He shared that his rib cage was rebuilt with metal, and he had received metal plates in his face and titanium rods in one of his legs due to his injuries. Renner, too, candidly revealed he was “terrified” to take on new acting roles during an appearance on the Smartless podcast 18 months after the accident.

“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” he said at the time. “I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can, you know, have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing.”

Renner recently reflected on the accident two years later with a heartfelt post on Instagram to thank the medical staff who saved his life and aided in his recovery.

“I send out my love, respect, and gratitude for the army of people that it took to put me back together again,” he wrote. “Thank you to each and every nurse, doctor, first responder … I literally owe you my life.”
