The Wild Robot soared to No. 1 at the box office last September — and now the family-friendly movie has scored three Oscar nominations, including for best animated feature film.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s film is based on the first title in author Peter Brown’s New York Times bestselling three-book series and stars Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of Rozzum 7134 (a.k.a. Roz), a robot stranded on a remote island inhabited only by wildlife. She adopts an orphaned gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor) and becomes a part of the animal community. When her past comes back to haunt her, Roz is determined to protect her wildlife family. The Chris Sanders-directed film also features the voices of Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames, Mark Hamill and Catherine O’Hara.

The Wild Robot also earned nominations for best original score and best sound. The DreamWorks Animation title nabbed 10 nods for the 2025 Annie Awards, including for best feature, best FX and best character animation. Sanders confirmed plans for the sequel based on the second book, The Wild Robot Escapes, while speaking at a Deadline Contenders event in London on Oct. 12. “One hundred percent yes, there are absolutely plans for a second one,” he said.
During The Hollywood Reporter‘s Animation Roundtable last year, the director shed more light on how the story spoke to him.
“It was certainly Peter Brown’s [2016] book, which centers around a lost robot,” Sanders explained. “Of course, I love robots, and the idea of a robot that doesn’t even know it’s lost is just really charming and compelling. But the cherry at the center was the mom story [voiced by Lupita Nyong’o]. I never get to work on things like that. The idea at the very core of The Wild Robot was a mom, and that for me was a really intriguing and compelling challenge.”
