On the scale of ultra-private to ultra-public celebrity couples, Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are debatably right in the middle. After all, while they rarely talk about each other and their family, the pair has graced quite a few red carpets together over the years.

Most recently, the couple, who has been together since 2017, attended another star-studded carpet together at the Fourth Annual Academy Museum Gala on Oct. 19. For the night, the Jokie: Folie à Deux star wore a classic black tux and white button-down with his salt-and-pepper hair slicked back with gel. Mara, on the other hand, looked angelic in a floral sheer vintage Givenchy gown with an empire waist paired with white lace panties underneath.
Together, the two looked absolutely stunning together. While Mara brought some softness, Phoenix was all kinds of sharp and dapper.
And as they posed for pictures on the carpet, Phoenix and Mara shared a sweet moment when he knelt down to fix the train for Mara’s dress. While he laid the fabric out nice and pretty, Mara was clearly blushing.
In another picture of the sweet moment, Phoenix is seen standing up and looking so proud of himself for fixing the dress. Mara, who’s still smiling at her partner, fans out of her hands around her hips as if telling the photographers, “I’m ready for my photo now!”
Prior to their red-carpet date night at the gala, rumors that the two had a secret wedding recently were at an all-time high. As a reminder, Phoenix and Mara got engaged back in 2019 and share kids River, 4, and their second child, who they welcomed in June 2024.
In early October, during an episode of Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, Phoenix referred to Mara as his “wife” and rumors started swirling. “I was talking with my mom and my wife,” Phoenix said of when he was thinking of what to say in his 2020 Oscars speech for Best Actor, per E! News. “And we were just kind of like, talking s–t, philosophizing.”
He then remembered a quote from his late brother, River Phoenix: “Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.” “Rooney was like, ‘That’s what you should f— say!'” Phoenix remembered.
Married or not, it seems these two are happy as can be, from the red carpet and beyond!
