Fans might be wondering why Julia Roberts was the person to induct the Dave Matthews Band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 19. On the surface, it seems like a random choice, but in reality, it’s for a very romantic reason.
She revealed why she was there to the audience at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. “The first time I ever danced with my husband was almost 25 years ago to a Dave Matthews Band song,” she said. “That was a winning combination as I have been swooning over my husband and this band ever since.” As the fans applauded her revelation, she joked about them “clapping for swooning.”

“We’re not just fans. We are lifelong fans,” the 56-year-old actress added while noting that she was “deeply honored to be a part of heralding these men.” The Pretty Woman star didn’t share what Dave Matthews song gave her a romantic memory with Moder, but it was enough to help her celebrate the musicians’ notable day in their careers. The couple met on the set of the 2001 film, The Mexican, when she was still dating actor Benjamin Bratt and he was married to makeup artist Vera Steimberg.
It was a messy split with their significant others, but Roberts and Moder eventually walked down the aisle in 2002 at their New Mexico ranch. They share three children, 19-year-old twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, and a 17-year-old son, Henry. The Oscar winner gushed about her family on CBS Sunday Mornings in 2022, and how Moder really made her dreams come true in her personal life.
“It’s just never consumed me, being an actor. It is my dream come true. But it is not my only dream come true. The life that I’ve built with my husband. The life that we’ve built with our children. That’s the best stuff, to come home at the end of the day triumphantly to them,” Roberts said. “I always think that they all look like me. And then Danny comes home from work, and I go, ‘Oh, you, that’s who they look like.’”
When the duo was apart while she filmed Ticket to Paradise for 62 days in Australia during the pandemic, Roberts and Moder kept their romance alive with old-school, handwritten letters to each other. “It’s something Danny and I have always done,” she said. “The first letter he ever wrote me, which was seven pages long, I still have it tucked away. One day I’ll show it to Hazel and say, ‘That’s what you’re looking for.’”
